A Modder Turns The Original Xbox Into A Handheld Gaming Machine

This is the closest thing to an Xbox handheld console.

Xbox never has a handheld gaming console; although Microsoft is reportedly considering releasing a handheld Xbox, there is no confirmed release date as of now.

In the meantime, a skilled modder has transformed the original Xbox into a handheld device.

This custom Xbox features a 9-inch 480p screen, 100W USB-C charging, and a fully operational Xbox controller.

For reference, this is what the original Xbox, released in November 2001, looks like.

It also has the potential for touchscreen capabilities by incorporating a touch-sensitive display. The modder intends to integrate Wi-Fi 6 for complete Xbox Live functionality in the future.

The device is powered by a Li-ion battery whose capacity is not specified. The modification process was complex, requiring the redesign of numerous PCB components.

Additionally, only certain Xbox motherboards are suitable for this portable adaptation. The modder also shared the entire modification process and PCB source code, providing an opportunity for others to replicate the build.

Building one may not be simple, but if you’re eager to play original Xbox games on-the-go without emulation, this is an option worth considering.
