On the third day of Apple’s “week of Mac,” the company finally unveiled the highly anticipated MacBook Pros with the M4 series chip.
Available in the familiar 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, they come with three chipset options: the M4, the M4 Pro, and the brand-new M4 Max, designed for demanding professional users.
The new MacBook Pros boast the same Liquid Retina XDR display, with a resolution of 3,024 x 1,964 pixels on the 14-inch model and 3,456 x 2,234 pixels on the 16-inch version. Both feature 120Hz ProMotion panels with True Tone and support the P3 color gamut.
Apple has introduced an optional nano-texture finish that allows the displays to reach 1,000 nits of SDR brightness and up to 1,600 nits in HDR.
A new 12MP selfie camera with Center Stage technology ensures you remain in the shot even when moving, while also providing enhanced video quality.
Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max chips boast faster GPU cores, with a ray-tracing engine and neural engine that are twice as fast as those in the M3 series.
The M4 Max chip, tailored for users requiring a powerful laptop for their work, features up to 16 CPU cores and up to 40 GPU cores, along with up to 128GB of unified memory. Apple asserts that the M4 Max delivers 3.5 times the performance of the M1 Max.
The input/output configuration remains similar to the previous generation, but the base 14-inch Pro now includes a third Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port. The left side houses the MagSafe charging port, two Thunderbolt 4 ports (Thunderbolt 5 on the M4 Pro and Max models), and a headphone jack.
The right side features an HDMI port, a third Thunderbolt 4/5 port, and an SDXC card slot. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
The 14-inch MacBook Pros are equipped with 72.4Wh batteries and come with either a 70W (M4) or 96W (M4 Pro/Max) power adapter.
The 16-inch model includes a 100Wh battery and a 140W USB-C power adapter. Apple’s baseline M4 model is said to offer up to 24 hours of battery life, while the 16-inch M4 Max variant is rated for 18 hours on a single charge.
Apple also announced that its MacBook Air models, including both the 13-inch and 15-inch versions, will now come with 16GB of RAM as standard, all while maintaining the starting price at RM4,499.
