Apple has limited high refresh rate displays to its iPhone Pro models, even though this feature is available on budget Android phones. However, this may change in the near future.
A Korean news outlet, ET News, quoting an industry insider, reports that the upcoming iPhone 17 models set to launch next year are expected to feature LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) screens. This technology allows for a high refresh rate with precise control.
A higher refresh rate provides a smoother user experience, especially noticeable when scrolling, viewing animations, and playing games that support higher frame rates.
Unlike conventional LTPS (Low Temperature PolySilicon) displays found in current iPhones, LTPO screens can operate at a very low refresh rate, going down to 1Hz in certain scenarios, such as when the display is static or when using an always-on display feature.
The advantage of a lower refresh rate is the conservation of battery life, making LTPO screens beneficial even for users who are indifferent to the 120Hz refresh rate.
Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants also stated that the standard iPhone 17 models will be getting the 120Hz screen.
