In the gaming console market, Xbox is the only major brand that has not released a handheld console. Both PlayStation and Nintendo have a long-standing presence in the handheld segment.
However, it appears that Microsoft is contemplating an entry into the handheld console market soon.
In a Bloomberg interview, Spencer stated that there is an “expectation is that we would do something” in the handheld gaming device sector, although such a product is still a few years away.
Microsoft is actively working on prototypes and exploring possibilities, with the team shaping its concept for a handheld device by studying the market.
In the near term, the focus will be on enhancing the Xbox app to perform better on current handheld gaming devices.
Spencer expressed a long-term interest in device creation, saying, “Longer term, I love us building devices,” Spencer said. “And I think our team could do some real innovative work, but we want to be informed by learning and what’s happening now.”
