Sony Is Reportedly Working On A New Handheld PlayStation Console

This handheld console can play games locally, unlike the recently released PlayStation Portal.

Sony is reportedly making a comeback in the handheld console market with a new portable device capable of playing PS5 games on the move.

According to Bloomberg, the device is currently under development but may not be released soon and could possibly be scrapped. Sony has not provided any comments on the matter.

The intention behind this move is to broaden the PlayStation game market with a handheld console that supports PS5 games.

Should this console reach the market, Sony would be competing with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and a handheld Xbox, which Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s gaming division, has acknowledged is in development, albeit several years away from release.

Sony’s latest release, the “PlayStation Portal,” is a handheld console designed for streaming games from a PS5, lacking the capability to play games locally, unlike the Nintendo Switch.

The previous Sony handheld console with local game playability was the PlayStation Vita, released in December 2011.
