Xiaomi Reportedly Developing Custom Smartphone Chip To Compete with Industry Giants

Mass production is set for next year, with smartphones using the chip expected in 2025.

Xiaomi is reportedly developing its own in-house chipset to decrease its dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek.

According to Bloomberg, mass production of the chipset is expected to start next year, with the first smartphones using it launching in 2025.

Chinese officials have been urging local companies to minimise their reliance on foreign technology. The positioning and market segment for the new chip, as well as its performance relative to Qualcomm and MediaTek’s products, are yet to be determined.

Xiaomi plans to increase its research and development investment to CNY30 billion (RM18.4 billion) in 2025, up from CNY24 billion (RM14.7 billion) this year, with the new chipset being a part of this investment.

In China, Huawei remains the sole company that uses and develops its proprietary Kirin mobile chips, a strategy necessitated by United States sanctions imposed in 2019.
