WhatsApp’s New Feature Uses AI To Summarise Messages

It's only available for users in the U.S. and works in English only for now.

WhatsApp just rolled out a new feature that uses AI to summarise your messages. It’s called “Message Summaries,” and it relies on Meta AI to quickly and privately give you a rundown of unread messages in a chat.

Here’s how it works: if you tap on the unread messages count in a chat, WhatsApp will generate a neat bullet-point summary for you.

The feature uses Meta’s Private Processing tech, which lets Meta AI create these summaries without compromising your privacy.

WhatsApp says this means no third parties—not even Meta or WhatsApp themselves—can read your messages or the summaries. Plus, others in the chat won’t know if you’ve used the feature.

Message Summaries is totally optional and turned off by default. If you want to use it, you can tweak the “Advanced chat privacy” setting to choose which chats are shared for AI features.

Right now, the feature is only available for users in the U.S. and works in English, but WhatsApp plans to expand it to more regions and languages later this year.
