Taiwanese authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Pete Lau, the chief executive officer of Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus.
The allegation is that he was involved in operating a business and recruitment activities on the island without official approval, which breaches local regulations, according to Reuters.
The case, falling under Taiwan’s laws governing relations with China, also includes indictments against two Taiwanese citizens. They are accused of assisting Lau in illegally running OnePlus operations and recruiting more than 70 local employees.
The core issue centres on the hiring process, which authorities say was conducted without prior government approval. This puts it in violation of what’s known locally as the “Cross-Strait Act,” the set of rules that regulates interactions between Taiwan and China.
According to the allegations, the employees in Taiwan were hired to carry out software application research and development for OnePlus, along with verification and testing work related to smartphones.
