OpenAI Reportedly Working On An AI Earbuds Designed By Jony Ive

The earbuds will be called "Dime".

Back in May 2025, OpenAI snapped up Jony Ive’s startup, io. It felt like a massive moment for the industry, with the former Apple design boss and his team getting tasked with a secret AI project.

We’ve been left wondering what they were actually cooking up in the lab, but a recent report has finally given us a proper look at what is on the cards.

It turns out OpenAI is moving into the hardware space with its first-ever physical product: a pair of earbuds. Powered by the company’s own in-house AI models, the project is reportedly going by the name Dime.

While we do not have a full spec sheet just yet, the idea of having ChatGPT sitting right in your ears is definitely enough to pique some interest among the tech crowd.

The plan is to get these out to the public by the end of this year, though there is a bit of a catch. Because of the ongoing shortage of high-bandwidth memory, the initial launch might be a bit more modest than first planned.

Once those supply chain issues finally settle down, the report says OpenAI is expected to follow up with a more advanced version of the product for those wanting a bit more power.
