WhatsApp Web Gets Voice And Video Calling At Last

But it's only available for beta users for now.

WhatsApp Web was first launched back in January 2015, but for some reason, the browser version has always felt a bit stripped back without any proper voice or video call support and you can only send voice messages.

That is finally starting to change though, as the latest beta programme is beginning to roll out calling features at last, according to WABetaInfo. For the time being, it is a bit of a slow release for those on the beta track, and it only supports one-to-one chats, but it is a massive step in the right direction.

You can even share your screen now, which is a handy little bonus for those of us trying to troubleshoot things for friends and family.

Looking ahead, it seems like group calls are on the horizon too, with plans to eventually support up to 32 people at once. We are also expecting to see things like call links and scheduled chats popping up in future updates.

As you would expect from WhatsApp, everything stays private because calls on the web version use the same Signal protocol for end-to-end encryption as the mobile app. It has been a long time coming, but it is great to see the web experience finally catching up.
