It looks like Instagram is about to make a fairly massive change to the way we handle our private chats.
The platform has just confirmed it is waving goodbye to end-to-end encryption for messages, which has been essential for anyone prioritising their digital privacy. Starting from 8 May 2026, the feature will be officially retired, so it is probably a good idea to start thinking about backing up your various messages, videos and photos.
An Instagram spokesperson mentioned to The Verge that the decision really came down to the numbers, claiming that very few people were actually making use of the encryption feature in their daily chats.
For those who are not quite ready to give up on that level of privacy, the advice from Meta is pretty straightforward: head over to WhatsApp instead. While this might be a bit of a hassle for regular Instagram users who liked having everything in one place, at least WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are still keeping its encryption for the time being, so you still have a few options if you want to keep your conversations secure from prying eyes.
How End-to-End Encryption Works
Think of it like a digital handshake where every device in your chat holds a unique, secret key that keeps things private.
When you hit send on a message, your phone effectively puts it into a digital safe before it even leaves your device. This happens instantly, so by the time the message is out in the wild, it is already securely locked away. This digital padlock can only be opened by a device that holds one of those specific keys for that chat.
