Game Over For Afeela: Sony And Honda Shelve Electric Vehicle Plans

We were supposed to see the first EV from Sony Honda Mobility landing in California later this year.

It looks like the dream of a Sony-powered car is hitting the brakes. Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), a joint venture between Sony and Honda, has just announced they are pulling the plug on their Afeela electric vehicles (EV), shelving both the first- and second-generation models effective immediately.

The two giants released a joint statement confirming the news, and they are now set to re-evaluate the entire partnership they established back in 2022.

The Afeela 1, the first model of SHM, was scheduled to begin deliveries in California later this year, with a starting price of USD89,900 (~RM357,127).

Honda has confirmed that anyone who placed an order will be getting a full refund. While it is a shame we won’t see these EVs hitting the roads anytime soon, it seems the companies are prioritising their balance sheets over their EV ambitions for now, as Honda decided to overhaul their EV business.
