YouTube Launches Automatic AI Content Labels And Detection Tools

The whole point is to make sure viewers actually know what they are watching on the platform.

There is a deluge of AI videos on YouTube nowadays, and sometimes it can be difficult to ascertain whether a video is AI-generated. This is why YouTube has finally announced that any video uploaded to the platform that has been significantly altered or created using AI will carry a clear label to let you know.

If you are watching a traditional long-form video, you will spot this tag sitting right beneath the video player and just above the description box. For Shorts, the label will pop up as a direct overlay on top of the video itself.

While YouTube is still mostly leaning on creators to honestly tag their own AI content, it has also rolled out a content detection system to do some of the heavy lifting. This tech will analyse and flag AI-made videos automatically, even if a creator forgets or chooses not to label them manually.

If the system gets it wrong, creators can head over to YouTube Studio to sort out the disclosure status. However, you won’t be able to remove the tag if the video was built using YouTube’s own AI tools, such as Veo or Dream Screen, or if the file contains C2PA metadata.

For creators worried about their views or revenue taking a hit, there is some good news. YouTube has made it clear that these new disclosure labels won’t impact how videos are recommended by the algorithm or how they are monetised. The whole idea is simply to boost transparency across the platform so viewers actually know what they are watching.
