New Rumour Suggests Nintendo Switch 2 OLED Could Launch By 2028

It could go into mass production as early as late 2027 or early 2028.

Following the highly anticipated launch of the Switch 2 in June 2026, there is a rumour that Nintendo is planning to release an upgraded model further down the line.

The Japanese video game giant is reportedly looking to repeat its previous hardware strategy by introducing a premium display option to its latest console lineup.

According to a report from ZDNet Korea journalist Lee Ki-jong, Nintendo is currently reviewing plans to develop a Switch 2 OLED model. An industry insider shared that this potential upgrade would retain the same Full HD resolution of 1920×1080 found on the current Switch 2 LCD model.

If the company decides to greenlight the project, formal product development is tipped to begin by the end of this year, paving the way for mass production to start as early as late 2027 or early 2028.

However, the transition to a more vibrant screen is not yet set in stone. The primary hurdle preventing Nintendo from finalising these plans is the ongoing price difference between OLED and LCD panels, as the company aims to keep manufacturing costs in check.

If history is any indication, this patient approach mirrors Nintendo’s strategy with the original console, which debuted in March 2017 and received its popular OLED counterpart over four years later in October 2021.
