Google Assistant Shutdown Begins In September 2026 As Gemini Takes Over

But it will only affect Android devices, Wear OS smartwatches and Android Auto for now.

Google is wrapping up the Google Assistant era as Gemini officially takes the reins.

The wind-down kicks off on 4 September, though it might take a few weeks to ripple out to every user who has not made the jump yet, according to 9to5Google.

If you are using an Android phone, a Wear OS smartwatch, Android Auto in your car, or headphones connected to your mobile, you will see Google Assistant disappear over the coming weeks.

Driver-focused tech is getting a slightly staggered rollout, though. Vehicles running Google built-in (Android Automotive) are keeping Google Assistant operational for now, even after the September deadline.

Smart home gear is also getting a temporary pass, meaning Google TV devices, smart speakers, and smart displays should carry on as normal for the time being.

Google insists it is focused on delivering a seamless transition for everyone, promising that Gemini will end up providing a far more capable and versatile helper once you are fully onboarded.
