Sony Brings PS5 Pro-Style AI Upscaling Tech To The Standard PS5

Dubbed QSSR, it's available for two titles for now: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.

If you have been sitting there with your base PS5 wishing Sony would bring some of that incredible PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) AI upscaling tech over from the PS5 Pro, today is your lucky day. Sony has just revealed that a new upscaling tech is officially making its way to the standard console.

Dubbed Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, this feature is essentially a lightweight spin-off of the Pro’s PSSR. It was engineered specifically for the standard PS5 hardware, which does not have the dedicated machine-learning hardware packed into its beefier sibling.

Sony created QSSR as part of Project Amethyst, its ongoing graphics collaboration with AMD. It uses a streamlined neural network architecture tweaked to wring out as much performance as possible within the base console’s limits. Sony was quick to clarify that PSSR remains the best upscaling tech on the Pro, but QSSR still gives the regular console a boost in image detail and overall stability.

Players can already check out the technology in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei, which both picked up patches on 1 October 2026 to add QSSR as an optional graphic mode.

Insomniac Games mentioned that the upscaler sharpens pixel clarity in busy environments like Madripoor and Shinjuku, while Sucker Punch noted that it brings out finer character textures and temporal stability that simply was not achievable on the base console before.

Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac, shared that it brings extra detail to Logan’s journey while giving base players a real taste of the PS5 Pro experience. Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch, added that QSSR resolves fine details brilliantly, calling it a great step towards giving every PlayStation gamer the top-tier image quality previously reserved for Pro owners.
