Apple has finally given the iPad mini some long-overdue upgrades, bringing an OLED panel to the lineup for the very first time.
Under the screen, it is running Apple’s latest A20 Pro chip, though there is a bit of a catch. If you opt for the 128GB or 256GB storage options, you are getting a slightly binned chip with five CPU cores instead of the six found on the 512GB version. According to the official specs, those entry-level models miss out on one efficiency core and drop half the NPU performance, though everything else remains the same across the board.
Wireless connections get a nice bump to Wi-Fi 7, and the cellular edition comes equipped with 5G sub-6 GHz powered by an eSIM and Apple’s custom C2 modem. On top of that, Apple is boasting IP67 water and dust resistance, making this the first IP-rated iPad.

It has also undergone a proper diet. The new mini sits at just 5.4mm thin and weighs in at 255 grams, making it noticeably sleeker than the previous generation’s 6.3mm frame and 297-gram weight.
The front is dominated by an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2,316 x 1,512 resolution and slimmer bezels. It hits up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, and you can even configure it with matte nano-texture glass to cut down on glare.

Unfortunately, Apple stuck with a standard 60Hz refresh rate here. Considering the base iPhone 17 rocks a smooth 120Hz display, keeping ProMotion off the mini feels like a proper miss. Come on, Apple!
It works with both the Apple Pencil Pro and the standard USB-C Pencil, while the 12MP Center Stage camera has finally shifted to the landscape edge. On the back, there is a 12MP wide sensor.

Keeping things running is an 18.9Wh battery charged via USB-C, with Apple claiming you can top up to 50% in about 30 minutes if you plug into a 35W or higher adapter. That USB-C port also supports USB 3 speeds topping out at 10Gb/s.
