In a significant move to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) adoption across Malaysia’s civil service, approximately 445,000 public officers will soon have access to Google Workspace’s Gemini suite.
The announcement was made by Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo during the launch of “AI at Work 2.0,” an initiative designed to equip public servants with the latest generative AI tools to improve service delivery, according to FMT.
The initiative builds on the success of its predecessor, “AI at Work,” which was introduced in December 2024 alongside the establishment of Malaysia’s National AI Office (NAIO). The program aims to integrate advanced AI capabilities into government workflows, ensuring more efficient and effective public services.
“Through AI at Work 2.0 by NAIO and Google Cloud, the government is taking the lead in harnessing generative AI – with the right safeguards in place – to better serve the people under our five-year AI technology action plan,” said Gobind during the launch event.
AI at Work 2.0 will focus on training public officers to maximise the potential of Google Workspace with Gemini. This will include hands-on workshops on crafting effective prompts and identifying high-impact use cases for AI in government operations.
The initiative follows a successful pilot program, “AI at Work,” which involved 270 public officers from various government agencies.
The pilot program demonstrated promising results, with 97% of participants reporting an average time savings of 3.25 hours per week.
Additionally, 91% of participants noted that generative and Agentic AI tools significantly improved the quality of their work, according to Rahul Sharma, Managing Director of Public Sector Business for Google Cloud Asia Pacific.
