It turns out there is a new powerful spyware doing the rounds, and it is specifically aimed at iPhone users.
Mobile devices security experts at Lookout and iVerify have teamed up with Google to exposed a spyware called DarkSword, which is capable of stealing your private info.
Google reckons it has seen commercial surveillance companies and state-linked hackers deploying the tool in targeted campaigns across Ukraine, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia.
The researchers found that the malware was being delivered through dozens of Ukrainian websites, specifically hunting for people running older versions of iOS between 18.4 and 18.6.2. In Malaysia and Turkey, the activity was tied back to a Turkish firm called PARS Defence.
It is a bit of a wake-up call for anyone who thinks iPhone is an impenetrable fortress, though it is still unclear exactly how many devices have been compromised in the wild.
Apple has already weighed in on the situation, with a spokesperson telling Reuters that these attacks were essentially picking on out-of-date software. They pointed out that the vulnerabilities Darksword exploits have actually been addressed in various updates over the last few years. According to them, staying on top of your software updates remains the most effective way to keep your data under lock and key.
To add an extra layer of protection, Apple has also blocked the malicious domains identified by Google within Safari, so the Safe Browsing feature should stop you from landing on those dodgy sites in the first place.
For the rest of us, the advice is pretty straightforward: if you have been ignoring that little notification in your settings menu, now is probably the time to finally install that update and keep the hackers at bay.
