Nintendo Switch 2 Unveiled: Bigger Display & Redesigned Joy-Cons With New Features

Alongside the reveal of the console, Nintendo also teased a new Mario Kart with 24 players!

After years of anticipation, numerous rumours, and leaks, Nintendo has finally unveiled the long-awaited successor to the Switch. The announcement came in the form of a YouTube trailer that showcased the new console’s design.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is noticeably larger than its predecessor, boasting a bigger display. While it’s currently unclear whether the screen is an LCD or OLED, rumors suggest it measures 8.4 inches. The trailer highlights slimmer display bezels, contributing to a more modern look.

The updated Joy-Cons are also larger and appear to attach magnetically rather than using the previous rail system.

A key change in the right Joy-Con is the addition of a new button situated below the home button.

Both Joy-Cons now feature extra triggers located on the back, adjacent to the L and R buttons, used to detached the Joy-Cons from the tablet.

Besides that, the Joy-Cons come with optical sensors, possibly allowing them to be used like a mouse, plus other functions yet to be revealed.

The Switch 2 includes two USB-C ports (one on top and another at the bottom) and a redesigned U-shaped kickstand on the back. This kickstand is sturdier and supports a wider range of angles, addressing a common complaint about the original Switch’s flimsy stand.

Lastly, Nintendo stated that the Switch 2 can play Switch games (digital and physical), but there are some limitations.

While the trailer didn’t delve into technical specifications or performance details, Nintendo confirmed a dedicated Nintendo Direct event on 2 April 2025. This event is expected to provide more comprehensive information about the Switch 2’s capabilities and launch lineup.

Additionally, Nintendo announced a series of Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, where fans will have the opportunity to try out the new console firsthand.

These events will take place in select cities, offering gamers an early chance to explore the enhancements and innovations of the Switch 2.
