Sony just dropped a massive bombshell on Wednesday (1 July 2026), announcing that they are officially killing off physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028.
From that point on, every brand-new release will be purely digital, available only through the PlayStation Store or digital codes from other retailers. If you are a collector who loves having physical cases on your shelf, don’t panic just yet, as any games released before the cutoff date will still keep their disc versions.
According to Sony, this move is simply about keeping up with how the gaming community has evolved. They mentioned that the general preference for digital media is massively outpacing physical discs now, making this a natural step forward for Sony Interactive Entertainment.
It is wild to think about that famous video Sony released back in the early days of the PS4, showing how easy it was to share a physical game with a friend. Fast forward to the near future, and that concept is completely dead.
Even if publishers decide to keep putting boxes on retail shelves, those cases won’t actually have a disc inside them anymore. Instead, you will just be opening up a plastic shell to find a piece of paper with a download code printed on it.
This shift to an all-digital future comes with some pretty massive downsides for gamers, particularly when it comes to the second-hand market. By eliminating discs, Sony is effectively killing off the used games market, meaning you can forget about selling your old games or grabbing cheap pre-owned copies.
Instead, players will be completely at the mercy of the PlayStation Store, forced to wait around for official digital sales and discounts.
There is also a much bigger security risk to think about with a digital-only ecosystem. If your account gets hacked, banned, or you somehow lose access to it permanently, your entire library vanishes into thin air.
With physical discs, your games belong to you no matter what happens to your digital profile, but in this upcoming era, losing your account means losing absolutely everything.
