Qualcomm just lifted the curtain on two new chips destined for the next wave of flagship Android devices: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the even stronger Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
Think of the standard Elite as the direct successor to last year’s Gen 5, while the Extreme sits a step above for anyone who wants absolute peak performance.
Both processors are built using a cutting-edge TSMC 2nm process and run on Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU, featuring two Prime cores clocked at 5GHz alongside six Performance cores running at 4GHz.
The standard chip delivers a 10% jump in CPU performance while slashing power usage by 37% compared to the Gen 5. The Extreme pushes CPU performance a bit further with a 13% increase, and it adds a global H.266 VVC codec to keep video playback light on the battery.
Graphics get a massive refresh across the board thanks to a reworked Adreno GPU. You are looking at a 35% boost in GPU performance and a 40% improvement in power efficiency on the base model.
The Extreme version takes things up another notch with dedicated AI matrix cores, pushing GPU gains to 44% over last year’s 8 Elite Gen 5. It also packs 18MB of High Performance Memory for a 12% power saving. Gamers stand to benefit from Adreno Neural Fusion, which leverages those new GPU matrix cores to run AI super-resolution and frame generation, cutting power draw by up to 40% in supported titles.
AI workloads see a big upgrade too. The Hexagon NPU introduces a new Element Accelerator tailored for transformer workloads, giving large language models a noticeable bump. Under the hood, a layout of 12 scalar, 8 vector, 1 tensor, and 1 element core drives a 14% rise in NPU performance and a 20% increase in AI performance per watt.
Over on the Extreme chip, Qualcomm expanded the shared memory by 50% to handle Mixture of Experts models with over 30 billion parameters locally. Keeping these processes on-chip avoids constantly hitting external memory, delivering a 35% NPU performance leap and 33% better AI efficiency.
For camera duties, the Spectra ISP introduces Intelligent Pixel Control to analyze scenes right down to the individual pixel level. If you opt for a device powered by the Extreme variant, you will also gain support for 8K video capture at 60 frames per second and 4K ultra slow-motion at 240 frames per second.
Connectivity completes the package with a newly architected Qualcomm X105 5G modem bundled into both variants. Designed around 3GPP Release 19 5G Advanced standards, it uses a six-antenna array to grab multiple data streams simultaneously, yielding faster uplink speeds and a 10 percent boost to downlink rates.
As for where we will see these chips first, expect them to head straight to the upcoming Xiaomi 18 Pro lineup, the OnePlus 16, Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra and more. We expect to see these chips appearing on more Android devices in the near future as well.
