SMS With Links, Callback Numbers, And Personal Info Requests Are Banned Starting 1 September 2024

MCMC stated that the enforcement is designed to protect users from the increasing threat of SMS-based scams.

Starting 1 September 2024, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will enforce a new directive aimed at blocking SMS messages containing prohibited content such as hyperlinks, personal information requests, and callback numbers.

This move is part of MCMC’s ongoing efforts to protect users from the increasing threat of SMS-based scams.

In a recent statement, MCMC highlighted that these scams are often perpetrated by criminals posing as legitimate entities from both the private and public sectors, seeking to defraud unsuspecting victims.

Members of the public who continue to receive such SMS messages are encouraged to file a complaint with MCMC.

Complaints can be submitted through the website aduan.mcmc.gov.my, providing details such as the phone number or short code and a screenshot of the received message.

MCMC also urged the public to remain vigilant about messages containing URL links, personal information requests, and phone numbers sent through other communication platforms like WhatsApp.

Suspicious and potentially fraudulent messages can be reported directly to the platform provider or to MCMC for further action.
