Sony Reveals Next-Gen Display Tech: Precision RGB LED Control And High-Density Backlight

Sony claims that this new tech is even better than OLED.

Sony has unveiled a groundbreaking display technology that integrates its proprietary signal processing, individual RGB LED control, and a high-density backlight system.

The company claims that this innovation enables red, green, and blue LEDs to function independently, delivering vibrant and precise colours while supporting wide colour gamuts, even on larger screens.

The advanced backlight control further enhances the display’s ability to render delicate hues and smooth light gradations, making movies with deep blacks, accurate light gradients, and nuanced colours appear stunning.

This new RGB LED design achieves 99% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and approximately 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 gamut. With zonal peak brightness exceeding 4,000 cd/m², the technology ensures exceptional performance for HDR content.

Sony also highlights that the precise backlight control addresses common issues found in current OLED panels, such as over-brightened elements, crushed blacks, and challenges with intermediate tones.

The company plans to incorporate this innovation into consumer TVs and professional displays tailored for content creation, with mass production expected to begin later this year.

To bring this technology to life, Sony collaborated with MediaTek for the control processors, ROHM for the LED drive ICs, and Sanan Optoelectronics for the LEDs.
