Word on the street is that Sony might be dialling back on its XR (Extended Reality) hardware and software side of business, which could mean bad news for the future of PSVR 2 (PlayStation Virtual Reality 2) on the PS5.
A recent report from ZDNet Korea, picked up by Road To VR, reveals that Meta has snapped up a chunk of Sony patents tied directly to XR headset tech. The intellectual property includes information processing for XR applications, head-mounted displays, and various smart glass designs filed by Sony between 2010 and 2022. A Confirmatory Assignment agreement signed by both tech giants in December 2025 points to a total of 419 global patents changing hands.
Handing over such a massive pile of patents to Meta strongly hints that Sony is stepping back from its own XR hardware goals. Neither company has made an official comment on the deal just yet.
Honestly, this probably will not shock anyone who has been keeping an eye on the platform. Sony barely bothered to market the PSVR 2 anymore, and the stream of new PS5 games for the headset has pretty much dried up.
