Honor recently launched its flagship foldable, the Magic V5, boasting it as the “world’s thinnest” at just 8.8mm in its Ivory White variant.
However, this claim has come under scrutiny, as real-world comparisons reveal that Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 is actually the slimmest foldable available .
The discrepancy stems from Honor’s measurement methodology. The company excludes the pre-applied screen protector and the camera bump from its official thickness figures, a practice that deviates from industry norms.
In contrast, Samsung’s 8.9mm measurement for the Z Fold 7 accounts for the phone’s full dimensions, including all protective layers. Independent tests using micrometers and side-by-side demonstrations confirm that the Z Fold 7 is marginally thinner than the Magic V5, measuring approximately 8.79mm.
That said, the difference is negligible in everyday use. Both devices are so close in thickness that the distinction is virtually imperceptible without direct comparison. The debate highlights how foldable manufacturers are pushing the limits of design, with marginal gains now serving as marketing battlegrounds rather than meaningful user-experience improvements.
