CD Projekt Red has just dropped a massive announcement: The Witcher 3 is getting another huge overhaul, and it lands on 29 September as a free upgrade for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S owners.
It feels like just yesterday we were playing through the 2015 original, or even enjoying the visual polish of the 2022 next-gen update. But CDPR clearly isn’t done with Geralt’s journey just yet, and this latest version is shaping up to be the most definitive take on the game so far.
This time around, the studio is completely reworking core gameplay mechanics. Expect much tighter combat, smoother movement and traversal, and a far less clunky experience when riding Roach. They’ve also overhauled monster behaviour, revamped the entire skill tree, added a long-awaited armour transmog system, and expanded the photo mode alongside a bunch of new finisher animations.
On top of that, there’s a heap of quality-of-life additions including cross-platform mod support, better quest tracking, immersive meditation, updated UI, modernised tutorials, and a complete rework of how looting works.
Visually and technically, the list of upgrades is practically endless. PC players get the full package with Nvidia DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4, Intel XeSS 2.0, path tracing, ray reconstruction, and even ray-traced hair physics. Across platforms, you can look forward to upgraded global lighting, better HDR, new foliage shading, refined motion blur, and improved ray tracing overall. PS5 Pro support is officially confirmed, while Xbox gamers get Play Anywhere integration, and Nintendo’s upcoming successor receives its own mysterious exclusive features.
To top it all off, CDPR offered a quick update on the recently teased expansion, Songs of the Past. Players will be heading to an entirely new region called Letten, though you’ll have to wait a little while longer to explore it, as the paid DLC is slated to arrive across all major platforms in 2027.
