WhatsApp Dropping Support For Android KitKat Smartphones Starting 1 January 2025

Meta is planning to implement more advanced features functions into the messaging app, which the older devices can't support.

If you are using WhatsApp on your Android phone that is running Android KitKat (4.4), you should switch to a new phone as soon as possible.

Smartphones still operating on that version the OS or older will no longer have access to WhatsApp starting 1 January 2025.

Meta is looking to implement more demanding features, AI functionalities, etc., which require modern hardware, which the older phones can’t support.

Here are most of the phones that will not be able to use WhatsApp soon:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

If you are still using one of these phones as primary device, it’s advisable back up all your WhatsApp data on a newer phone. Otherwise, all media and chat history on WhatsApp will be lost after 1 January 2025.
