Ditch The Touch ‘n Go Card: Buses And Trains Are Finally Getting Cashless Payment Options Soon

You can use a debit/credit card, QR code or NFC payment like Apple/Google/Samsung Pay.

Exciting news for commuters in the Klang Valley. Soon, you will be able to ditch your Touch ‘n Go (TnG) card and tap into buses and trains using your preferred cashless payment methods.

Whether you prefer flipping out a debit or credit card, scanning a QR code, or just tapping your phone with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay, public transport is finally getting a much-needed modern upgrade.

According to Malay Mail, Prasarana is actively working on bringing this open payment system to life. The project is currently sitting in the final stages of the award process, so we should see things officially finalised in the very near future.

The transport operator has confirmed that this initiative aims to make commuting a breeze by letting everyone use bank cards and mobile wallets for seamless travel. They also mentioned that QR code payments are baked right into the rollout plan, covering both rail and bus networks.

As for when you can actually leave your TnG card at home, it will happen in phases once the contract is officially awarded. Prasarana expects the open payment system to be fully up and running within 15 months for its bus services, while the rail network will take up to 30 months to be completely integrated.

The best part is that you won’t have to wait for specific features to trickle in over years, as Prasarana noted that all payment modes, including credit, debit, QR, and NFC, will be delivered within that project timeline.

The rollout will eventually span across the LRT, MRT, Monorail, BRT, MRT Feeder buses, and even Rapid Penang. The only slight exception might be the Rapid KL On-Demand services, which could follow a slightly different schedule depending on how they prioritised things down the line.
