I have been using the Oppo Reno16 for two weeks, which is a review unit loaned to me by Oppo Malaysia, and I have some thoughts about this compact phone.
What’s in the box
Let us start with what your are getting in the box. You get the phone, an 80W SUPERVOOC charger, a USB-C cable and a case. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.
Design and build quality
Oppo has always excelled at creating eye-catching smartphones, and the Reno16 is no exception. It is compact, featuring a slim 8.36mm profile and a lightweight 193g chassis that makes one-handed usage comfortable. The rear panel utilises what the company calls HoloVerse 3D technology, which produces a striking 3D illusion effect under changing light.
Despite its elegant and slender aesthetic, durability has been given a massive upgrade. The device features an aerospace-grade aluminium frame and boasts an extraordinary combination of IP68, and IP69K ratings. This means it is highly resistant to dust, submersion, and even high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, offering flagship-level ruggedness.
Additionally, a dedicated physical ‘AI Snap Key’ has been added to the side frame, giving users a customisable shortcut for launching the camera or triggering AI shortcuts instantly.
Display
The front of the phone is dominated by a 6.32-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel pushing a crisp 2640×1216 resolution. With a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, navigating through the interface and scrolling through social feeds feels incredibly fluid. The screen bezels are rather thin, resulting in an immersive display that defies the phone’s smaller footprint.
Outdoor visibility is good, thanks to advertised peak brightness of 1,800 nits, ensuring the screen remains perfectly legible even under direct midday sunlight. The photo below might look a bit dim, but trust me, it’s bright enough to be legible.
Colour reproduction is punchy and vibrant, presenting deep blacks and excellent contrast that make streaming high-definition content a joy. It also features high-frequency PWM dimming to reduce eye strain during late-night browsing sessions, rounding off an excellent visual package.
Performance
The Reno16 is equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chipset, paired with 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, but no expendable storage. While it does not aim to break records in synthetic benchmark tests, the chip prioritises day-to-day efficiency and sustained thermal stability.
Navigating the UI, multitasking between intensive applications, and handling regular productivity tasks are entirely seamless. Casual gaming poses no threat to the hardware, though mobile gamers looking to run resource-heavy titles at maximum graphical settings may want to look elsewhere. For the vast majority of users, the performance on offer is perfectly optimised for a smooth, lag-free experience.
Camera
Oppo has opted for a highly versatile triple 50-megapixel camera array on the rear, eliminating filler macro sensors. The setup comprises a 50MP main sensor with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), a 50MP ultrawide lens, and a 50MP telephoto camera capable of a 3.5x optical zoom.
Main Sensor: Captures sharp, detailed images with natural-looking dynamic range and slightly saturated, social-media-ready colours.
Telephoto Lens: Offers excellent clarity at 3.5x zoom, though digital magnification past its optical limit can trigger noticeable AI sharpening in low light.
Ultrawide Lens: Maintains excellent colour consistency with the main sensor, avoiding the jarring shifts often seen in mid-range devices.
Battery Life
With heavy use, incorporating mixed 5G connectivity, regular photography, and media streaming, the phone comfortably sails through a full day with some juice left for the next morning.
When it does come time to top up, the included 80W SUPERVOOC flash charging replenishes the 6,700mAh battery roughly around an hour. If you are looking for wireless charging, sadly this phone does not support it.
Software
The Reno16 ships with ColorOS 16, built on top of Android 16. OPPO’s skin has matured significantly, offering a clean, highly customisable user interface that minimises bloatware while keeping animations snappy.
The physical AI Snap Key integrates directly with ‘AI Mind Space’, a workspace that helps users quickly capture, clip, and organise on-screen information.
You can customise the Snap Key for other functions such as mute, quick access to camera, toggle flashlight and more.
Worthy of your money?
The Oppo Reno16 proves that a compact smartphone does not have to compromise on power or endurance.
While heavy gamers might yearn for a touch more raw graphical power, the Reno16 strikes an ideal balance for everyday users and it stands out as one of the most practical, durable, and well-rounded mid-range smartphones available today.
